A fish pond is a living ecosystem. What happens in the water decides how your fish get on, so our focus on every pond comes down to one thing: making sure the water stays healthy and the fish thrive.
Here is what matters most, from more than 15 years of looking after ponds across Christchurch and Canterbury.
Good water comes first
Water conditioners and beneficial bacteria help hold the chemistry steady for healthy fish and plants.
Keep the water moving and filtered
A blocked pump or a dirty filter stops the water moving and clearing. For crystal clear water we look for mechanical, biological and UV filtration combined. A UV clarifier clears green water and knocks back harmful pathogens without harsh chemicals.
Every pond and pump is different, so servicing can be needed anywhere from monthly to much less often. Our guide to specialist pond pumps covers the brands we supply and service.
Keep the bottom clean
Leaves and organic build-up sink and rot. As they break down they cloud the water and release toxic gases, which is the last thing your fish need. Scoop leaves out with a pond net before they settle, and when sludge has built up on the bottom, a deep clean takes it all out.
Keep algae in balance
Left alone, algae and blanket weed can take over a pond. We tackle green water and blanket weed using environmentally sound methods, so the pond stays in balance.
Fish through the seasons
- Stop feeding your fish when the water drops to 10°C.
- If ice forms, keep a hole open with a pond heater or de-icer so toxic gases can escape.
- Fish are more prone to parasites and illness in the colder months, so a fish treatment can be worth it. Popular options are API and Aquascape products.
- Service the pump and filter before any ice forms.

Signs your fish pond needs attention
- Green or cloudy water.
- Sludge and leaves on the bottom.
- A pump or filter that is struggling.
